Everyone at some period in their life may experience spinal compression syndrome.  It is the most common type of low back pain.  The human body by design is susceptible to mechanical stresses on our spine as a result of gravity, walking and sitting in an upright posture.

What is Spinal Compression Syndrome?
Research work that I performed while employed as a biomechanical engineer at the National College of Chiropractic Spinal Joint Research and Ergonomics Laboratory, confirms the presence of a condition I call the Spinal Compression Syndrome, SCS.

This is not considered a specific trauma with associated inflammation, swelling and tissue damage, but an accumulation of mechanical stresses on the vertebral segments of the spine.  The areas of the lumbar lower back and lower cervical neck regions are particularly susceptible to compressive stresses as a result of seated postures, bending positions and lifting activities.

The intervertebral disc or IVD acts as a cushion or sponge filled with fluid that absorbs the compression but will creep and compress with time if the compressive forces are not removed.  This is what happens when we sit for prolonged periods while driving a car, working at a computer all day or sitting at a desk.

By nature, our body is designed for movement, and by changing positions from sitting to standing to walking we release compressive stresses on our spine.  Over time if the compression is not released, then spinal compression syndrome or SCS develops and hence a subsequent chronic daily dull neck ache or low back pain.  If not released it is one common cause of spinal arthritis as a person ages.

Treatment for SCS
The specific treatment for SCS that will resolve this condition is SIVD.  SIVD or Spinal Inter-Vertebral Decompression procedure is a doctor controlled manual manipulation method which specifically releases compression between the inter-vertebral segments of the spine.  It is performed on a special table designed for this purpose with the patient lying on their stomach.  The procedure is the most gentle form of spinal manipulation available and is used with patients into their 80’s with success in alleviating their low back pain. I would like to note that many patients feel immediate relief of their neck and low back pain within two to three treatments because SCS is a mechanical compression of stress on the spine and is not due to inflammation or trauma.  So as soon as the compression is released, you feel an immediate decrease in pain.

Flexion-Distraction Spinal Decompression Therapy is the 21st century treatment for spine pain

Flexion-Distraction manipulation (also called Cox Decompression Adjusting) is an effective and gentle technique used to treat certain spinal conditions, especially those associated with disc pathology.

Lower back disc problems can cause pain and/or numbness in the back, buttocks, hip and leg (Sciatica).

Disc problems in the neck often cause pain in the neck, upper back, shoulder, and arm, and may cause numbness in the fingers. These conditions can be treated with Flexion-Distraction to open the disc space thus relieving pressure on the affected nerve.

Cox Flexion Distraction decompression adjusting, a specialized form of chiropractic manipulation, has been shown in numerous studies to be an effective and safe technique for lower back pain and radiculopathy (Sciatica). In a randomized clinical trial comparing chiropractic treatment to physical therapy, patients with radiculopathy did significantly better with flexion-distraction treatment than with physical therapy. Dr. Ralph Kruse was one of the research clinicians during a study of flexion-distraction performed to the lower back (lumbar spine) of ten cadavers. In this study, flexion-distraction was shown to create a decrease in intradiscal pressure (i.e.: reducing pressure inside the intervertebral disc helping to decrease disc bulges), increased posterior disc height and opened the vertebral canal and intervertebral foramen by up to 28%. All of these physiological effects help to relieve pressure on pain-sensitive spinal nerves.

Flexion-distraction is one of the most well-studied chiropractic procedures. It has been shown to be effective for the treatment of disc herniation, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis as well as spinal subluxations. Numerous studies have also shown this procedure to be effective in treating the neck (cervical spine). Disc pathology (slipped and degenerative discs) in the neck can cause neck, upper back, shoulder and arm pain and numbness. Federally funded studies continue to be performed to help document the physiological mechanisms resulting in the clinical successes demonstrated from the use of flexion-distraction to both the neck and back.

Cox® Technic is spinal manipulation performed on a specially designed chiropractic instrument (The Cox® Table for flexion-distraction) a movable caudal piece (that part on which a patient's legs lie). The section flexes, extends, laterally bends and circumducts (combination of flexion and lateral flexion), and long-y-axis plane distracts.

Cox® Technic drops intradiscal pressure, widens the spinal canal, reduces pressure on the spinal nerves, and return motions to spinal joints.

Cox® Technic is appropriate for low back and leg pain as well as neck and arm pain conditions.

Cox® Technic reduces pain due to disc herniation, slipped disc, ruptured disc, facet syndrome, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, neck pain, arm pain, leg pain, sciatica, and much more.

Cox® Technic is non-surgical, doctor-controlled, hands-on care for spinal pain conditions.

Cox® Technic seeks to return the patient to his/her desired QUALITY OF LIFE.
